Dust Cave was first excavated in 1989 by University of Alabama. It was led by Dr. Boyce Driskell who would discover many artifacts from the early Holocene and Pleistocene eras.

The cave is located high on the limestone bluffs overlooking the Tennessee River on a tributary called Coffee Slough.
